How we verify key fob batteries
A battery answer is only published when an official manufacturer source names it for that exact vehicle, year, market and key type.
Accepted sources
- Official manufacturer owner's manuals
- Official manufacturer owner portals (interactive manuals)
- Official manufacturer support websites
- Official manufacturer parts and support documentation
Forums, videos, retailers, locksmiths and other battery finders are used only to discover which vehicles people search for. They are never the source of a published answer. See the full source list.
Verification states
| State | Meaning | Published? |
|---|---|---|
| Official, exact | An official source names the battery for this year, market and key type. | Yes |
| Official, explicit range | An official source explicitly covers a stated range of model years. | Yes |
| Official, variant unclear | The official source names a battery but it can't be tied to one key type. | No |
| Secondary only | Only non-official evidence exists. | No |
| Conflict | Sources disagree and the disagreement is unresolved. | No |
| Unavailable | The official source is missing, inaccessible, or doesn't name the battery. | No |
Pages without a published answer are kept out of search results (noindex) and say clearly that the battery is not verified.
Data rules
- We never assume one year from an adjacent year. Example: Toyota lists CR2032 for every 2022 Corolla key, but CR2450 for 2023 smart keys.
- We never assume one country's answer applies to another. Each answer lists the markets its source covers.
- We never assume one key type per model year, and never guess a battery from how a key looks.
- Battery polarity and programming statements are shown only when the official source states them in text.
- Conflicting or overlapping records are flagged by automated checks; they are never merged silently.
Provenance we keep for every source
- The manufacturer's original URL and domain (the technical authority), checked against an approved list of manufacturer domains.
- The document's identity: title, publication number or edition, and the model, model years and markets it covers.
- A locator for each answer: page, section or heading, plus the heading that ties the battery to the key type.
- How and when we read it, with a SHA-256 fingerprint of the exact file for PDF manuals.
Archived copies
Some official PDFs cannot be downloaded from every country. An archived copy (Internet Archive) is accepted only when it is a capture of the manufacturer's own URL for that document, at a specific timestamp, and its fingerprint matches the official file. The manufacturer remains the source; the archive is only where a copy was read. Archived retailer pages, blogs, forums, other battery databases, screenshots and mirrored manuals are never accepted.
We don't host manuals
We link to manufacturer documents and record short facts and citations. We don't republish manuals or their illustrations.
What we don't cover
We cover battery identification and replacement only. We don't publish key cloning, key programming, immobilizer or any security-system procedures.
